30 July 2007:

They say August is the hottest month here...and that's no lie. It reached 135 yesterday, and it's been between 120 and 127 every day the past week. HOT!!

It's so crazy how when your environment changes, all of a sudden things that seemed simple and insignificant become like the "holy graille", like you'd do ANYTHING to get them. For instance, I would not hesitate for one second to jump off a 20 foot platform into brisk water, despite my incredible fear of jumping off tall stuff into water, just to feel the shock and rush of being enveloped by crystal clear, cool water...covering every square inch of me. I would welcome heartily the stinging force of water up my nose and all in my sinuses, I would revel in the coughing, gagging fit that would ensue. I would enjoy fully the gasping spasm that comes from jumping into frigid norcal river water. It's weird how things that used to scare you become the stuff of sweet daydreams! Things that meant little more than a task become unattainable luxuries...like baths, toast, real cars, kitchens, milkshakes...or just milk for that matter, sushi, fresh fruits and veggies, gardens...or just flowers in a vase, berries off the vine, hikes, trees, things that crawl but don't sting or bite, shivering, not sweating, cool breeze instead of hot blast, beach sand instead of desert dust, not squinting, getting a tan, wearing flipflops outside, sleeping in, bowling, not having a weapon hanging on the bedpost, I could go on, and on, and on, and on. I can't wait to go home!!
